When owner Damien Heath took over this tiny, art deco–era diner (orange Formica, wood panelling, chrome soda fountains) 13 years ago, the food wasn’t worth eating. It may have taken some years, but this ugly duckling has grown up beautifully, provoking lineups out the door even on rainy mid-week nights. The menu is mostly hits—generously portioned bistro classics and comfort food with Old World influences—and only a few misses. A tapas-sized dish of black Moroccan olives is fragrant with fennel and orange. Meltingly tender beef short ribs braised in beer and marmalade rest on a mound of buttery mashed potatoes, tender-crisp yellow beans and bok choy, all encircled by a moat of delicious, bittersweet jus. Maple crème brûlée is perfection. Friendly service. Mains $17–$26.
