Sidecar delivers well-crafted cocktails and simple yet polished dishes from a concise menu. The crowd, many neighbourhood regulars celebrating the weekend, is slightly older and calmer than on the rest of the club strip. The business-savvy owners also keep the place packed on weekdays with an excellent $25 prix fixe menu. The Sidecar salad, essentially a chopped Greek medley of red onion, cucumber, feta and corn in a creamy oregano dressing, is both texturally and palatably bang on. On a recent visit, the shrimp tempura is doughier than the typical Japanese variety, and the accompanying soy dipping sauce is watery, but the plump crustaceans pair perfectly with the Millionair, a fabulous whiskey-based cocktail. An eight-ounce sirloin is grilled textbook medium-rare, and the frites on the side—salty, crispy, skin-on shoestrings—are addictive. While there’s nothing technically wrong with the pan-fried halibut in tomato broth, this kitchen seems capable of more innovation. For sweet tooths, the flourless chocolate cake is rich and buttery. Otherwise, skip dessert and have another cocktail. Mains $16–$24.
