Scaramouche’s more casual dining room remains steadfastly popular with Forest Hill’s elite, many of them regulars since it opened in 1987. A sensational spin on beef stroganoff—on the menu since day one—brings a bowl of black peppercorn fettuccine with juicy morsels of beef tenderloin, oyster mushrooms and pine nuts in a divine madeira cream sauce; a gratiné roof of Gruyère and bread crumbs is the proverbial cherry on top. Haddock is also first-rate, falling into moist flakes under a tarragon bread crumb crust with a cornucopia of al dente vegetables and a savoury tomato vinaigrette. Mains $23–$39.
