Painted the colour of a white kidney bean—the restaurant’s namesake legume—and glistening with carefully polished stemware and cutlery, the dining room is a bright, friendly space. Co-chefs Philippe Coeurdassier and Daniel Muia have created a menu of classic bistro fare so retro it’s almost avant-garde: French onion soup, escargots au brie—there’s even chicken cordon bleu. The kitchen’s light, modern interpretations of these dishes, however, remind us why they became classics in the first place. It’s not all old school: one evening’s special, a take on poutine—with fingerling potatoes, braised wild boar and raclette cheese, house pickled onions and tart little gherkins—easily ranks among the best incarnations of the Québécois favourite. Informed, hospitable service and an affordable wine list encourage repeat visits. Mains $18—$29.
