Melanie’s is the kind of unpretentious bistro that makes you want to move into the neighbourhood. Diners are in no hurry to leave, lingering over dessert and their last glass of wine. What the menu lacks in originality it makes up for with solid technique and tremendous value—nothing is over $24. Crab cakes zinged with garlic, ginger and cilantro manage to be both meaty and light. Boneless chicken thighs are the star of a stellar coq au vin; the rich jus and smooth mashed potatoes taste like they came from a much more expensive restaurant. Peach crumble cake is moist and light. The wine list offers a decent selection, with nothing over $50 and almost everything available by the glass. Friendly service. Mains $16–$24.
