Brownes is one of those competent neighbourhood spots that’s had more or less the same menu, decor, staff and clientele for the last decade. And that’s not such a bad thing. Much of the food is very good. Pan-fried sardines are just a hair overcooked, but juicy nonetheless. Pizzas are a big draw, and for good reason. Crusts are gorgeously crusty-chewy with plenty of delicious toppings, like sweet caramelized onions, salty kalamatas and spicy sausage. Another specialty: house-made lamb sausage served with creamy garlic mashed potatoes and a little mix of du Puy lentils and cabbage that tastes more British gastro-pub than Rosedale bistro. Desserts are an unfortunate afterthought. Service that falters at first gets better as the night goes on. Mains $15–$33.
