Brownes has had more or less the same menu, decor and clientele for the last decade. That’s not such a bad thing—much of the food is very good. Pan-fried sardines are a hair overcooked, but juicy nonetheless. Pizzas are a big draw, and for good reason. Crusts are gorgeously crusty-chewy with plenty of delicious toppings, like caramelized onions, kalamatas and spicy sausage. Another specialty: housemade lamb sausage that tastes more British gastropub than Rosedale bistro. Service falters at first, but gets better as the night goes on. Mains $15–$33.
