The menu here takes a diasporic trip through African-American cuisine (hence the New York name and the southern and Caribbean dishes on the menu). Fried catfish Lafayette morsels are lightly battered and ungreasy, with a nice peppery bite, but Harlem crisps are bitter fried slices of cassava served with hummus and guac that’s cold from the fridge. A generous portion of jambalaya is studded with tender little shrimp, dark chicken meat and chunks of savoury sausage; the jerk sauce on a smoked jerk pork hock is wonderfully sweet and earthy. Crisp, lightly battered chicken is too dry to jazz up the waffles it’s served with (though the fascinating scotch bonnet sauce alongside captures all of the little chilies’ flavour while taming their heat—more of this, please). The cocktails lack sophistication. Mango cheesecake for dessert is properly creamy, its graham cracker crust touched with cinnamon. Mains $15–$23.
