Party Pages: Jason Priestley searches for poutine at Canadian Stage’s Theatre Ball: Happy 25!

Party Pages: Jason Priestly searches for poutine at Can-Stage’s Happy 25! Theatre Ball

March 7, The Carlu. “If there’s poutine, I’m in,” intimated the former Beverly Hills 90210 star as he weaved around throngs of Instagram-happy fans at the quarter-century fête for the Canadian Stage Company. Priestley is appearing in Can-Stage’s production of David Mamet’s Race this April, and when he wasn’t graciously chitchatting with admiring guests at the party, he told tales of Sarah McLachlan’s short stay-over at his Vancouver home before pausing to be auctioned to the highest bidder. While we’re not sure if he ever found the heaping pile of gravy, cheese curds and fries he desired, he did help the country’s largest not-for-profit theatre company raise over $300,000.

Party Pages: Opera supporters dance to Nelly Furtado and The Arkells at this year’s Operanation gala

Operanation, the annual party to benefit the Canadian Opera Company, is always one of the year’s biggest fetes (not least in terms of space—the party spans three floors of the Four Seasons Centre). This year, the main draws were musical guests Nelly Furtado and The Arkells, both accompanied by singers from the Opera Company. Before the performance, we spoke with Gabrielle Miller, everyone’s favourite Corner Gas star, about hopping between Canada and the U.S.—the actress is now multinational, having just starred in Psycho Therapy in New York. (The Vancouver native also touched on West Coast versus Ontario rivalries, joking that “the only people who rag on Toronto are the ones who haven’t visited it yet.”)

Roberta Bondar, Jamie Kennedy and seven others discuss The Art of the City at the latest Walrus Talk

Matt Galloway giving his talk on the art of inclusion (Image: Jack Landau)

Last week at the AGO, the Walrus Foundation convened nine prominent Torontonians—Midnight’s Children director Deepha Mehta, CBC’s Matt Galloway, chef Jamie Kennedy and astronaut Roberta Bondar among them—and gave them each seven minutes to talk about one aspect of “the art of the city.” The result: nine little TED talks, more or less, about different aspects of Toronto in 2012. Some were funny, some were profound, and yes, some were a little pedantic. Here’s how it all went down:

Party Pages: Artists, philanthropists and Margaret Atwood at the Art of Time Ensemble Salon

We’re fairly sure that having a piano quartet playing in the living room is a normal after-supper digestive for many Rosedale households. Having Gemini award-winner Nicholas Campbell read a monologue from the War of the Worlds, is likely more of a rarity. That experience, however, was part of the fifth annual Art of Time Ensemble Salon this past Wednesday night. Held at a private mansion (the kind with a lion-shaped door knocker and a tennis court-sized kitchen), the fundraiser for the venerable music ensemble drew creative types (painter Rundi Phelan, actor and Paul Gross sweetheart Martha Burns, director Daniel Brooks), philanthropists (Jim Fleck, CAMH chair Ana Lopes, Donald and Gretchen Ross) and the generally fabulous (James Stewart, the mathematician/text book writer who built possibly the most opulent residence in Toronto).

Party Pages: Martin Sheen, Jennifer Hudson and Steven Page hit Fort York for the 2012 Bliss Ball

Guests at the Bliss Ball benefit for Sick Kids Hospital on Saturday at Fort York certainly got a bang for their 1,500 bucks per ticket. The evening’s organizers managed to recruit a bevy of stars to pitch in, like erstwhile Barenaked Lady Steven Page, who started things off with an acoustic set that included “Old Apartment” and “Brian Wilson” before moving on to his duties as the evening’s emcee. Celebrated actor Martin Sheen and model Selita Ebanks stepped in as auctioneers, while Mark McEwan donned his chef’s whites and prepared ahi tuna, beef tenderloin and an apple crostata.

Party Pages: The Dark Knight Rises premiere after-party at Wayne Manor

The Dark Knight Rises Toronto premiere

One of the most anticipated films of the year, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, premiered last night at Scotiabank Theatre in all its IMAX glory. Cast members Matthew Modine and Nestor Carbonell were present (alas, there was no sign of Anne Hathaway, Christian Bale and Joseph Gordon-Levitt), but it was starlet Sarah Gadon who really stole the show—her frosty blonde locks stood out in the crowd, and her draped black cocktail dress was just coquettish enough. After the popcorn was eaten and the nearly three-hour-long film finished, guests moved on to a Dark Knight gala at 1 King West, which for one night only was converted into Wayne Manor. That project involved glossy couches, spotlights, live bats in a cage (shoved in a corner and not looking too pleased to be there) and an assembly of women who were hired to observe the party from a balcony and cast flirty glances at anyone who made eye contact (it was like Eyes Wide Shut, but without public, somewhat awkward looking, intercourse). There was much to see, from the replica Batman, Bane and Catwoman costumes to eTalk’s Ben Mulroney interviewing guests on a small stage (how he could hear anything, we’re not sure).

Party Pages: The Worthy 30, where people weren’t afraid to run their mouths about pretty young things

The National Post’s Worthy 30 list came out in late June, but the celebration for the eligible bachelors and bachelorettes took place last night at furniture shop Studio B, where the Grey Goose was plentiful and the air conditioner was cranked to its highest possible setting (we were deeply relieved, as it was stifling outside). The event almost felt like a graduation party: the now-pregnant Holt Renfrew publicist Jennifer Daubney, one of last year’s inductees, told Fashion magazine’s Randi Bergman that she’s “passing the baton.” But guests seemed curious about what, if anything, the W30 title actually entails. As far as we can discern, it’s the National Post’s way of congratulating the hard work of men and women who are contributing members of Toronto society (and are, for the most part, young and somewhat attractive).

Party Pages: Toronto’s high society attends a Flo Rida concert

Last night at the Liberty Grand, Flo Rida and Mia Martina performed at a truly bumping party for the Bay Street Grand Prix, a charity event supporting Sunnybrook Hospital’s Women and Babies program, which offers assistance to mothers who give birth prematurely. A dinner and auction kicked off the evening, but the real party was outside on the expansive patio. Before the performances, in what we dubbed “socialite corner,” we saw Jenna Bitove and Suzanne Rogers having girl talk oh-so-briefly before the sight of a camera sent Rogers darting for the door (she seems a little camera shy these days, but we can report that her bouffant was in truly fine form—not a hair out of place). Bitove, a standout in a Christopher Kane dress, took her cue as society up-and-comer and mugged for cameras. She was also spotted making the rounds, chatting up former college basketball player and Bay Street dude Ashanti Burke for an extensive period. She even regrouped with Rogers and her girlfriends for a bit of cellphone photography and dancing in the main room (yes, even Mrs. Rogers bobbed her poof to the musical stylings of Mr. Rida).

Party Pages: The Trillium Awards, a rowdy affair for beflowered Ontario authors

The Trillium Awards, the annual ceremony for Ontario-based authors, took place, fittingly, at the Toronto Reference Library last week. The awards have honoured some of Canada’s most famous writers, like Michael Ondaatje, Alice Munro and Margaret Atwood, and this was an extra-special night in celebration of the event’s 25th year. Nominees wore pink flowers, while past winners wore white to differentiate themselves in the massive crowd of literati (we guess wearing trilliums would be a little premature for the pink-flowered crowd). As it has since 1994, the event also fêted French- speaking nominees, so hosts Heather Hiscox of CBC News and Karen Thorn-Stone, president of the Ontario Media Development Agency, jumped between French and English (it becomes a rather long night when you hear everything twice). Though Hiscox sounded fluent, Thorn-Stone’s delivery seemed a touch forced—she even quipped, after her first French foray received a round of applause, “Now you’re just making fun of me.”

Party Pages: the Diamond Gala was packed with society types and tutus (many tutus)

Anyone wondering where moneyed Toronto arts patrons were on Wednesday night should have checked the Four Seasons Centre, where the city’s old guard convened for the National Ballet of Canada’s 60th-anniversary Diamond Gala. Outside the centre, models posed in the sweltering heat, fanned by custom-designed tutus as white-haired doyennes, tuxedoed power brokers and a handful of devil-may-care party-goers in canvas shorts walked the red carpet. Inside, guests were treated to performances by the company (including the famously breast- and butt-heavy pas de deux from the ’90s contemporary ballet Herman Scherman)—although some members, like principal dancer Jillian Vanstone and first soloist McGee Maddox, were spotted in the audience, enjoying a night off.

PARTY PAGES: Power Ball, where you will never run out of meat, alcohol or pretty things to look at

A party like the Power Plant gallery fundraiser Power Ball: Quarter-Life Crisis hasn’t happened in Toronto since the Dangerous Method fete at Soho House last TIFF. The celebrity presence may not have been there, but the attitude was the same: old biddies, artists, hipsters, PR gals and banker bros all partied together, taking in unusual art while drinking a lot (a lot) and eating wild bison sandwiches prepared by celebrity chef Marc Thuet in between emergency dance breaks. A party of such esteem isn’t without its boldface names, and we saw Belinda Stronach, writer Victoria Webster, the Globe and Mail’s Gabe Gonda, gossip columnist Shinan Govani, Zoomer’s Suzanne Boyd, artist Rui Amaral, eTalk’s Tanya Kim, designer Jeremy Laing, accessories designer Maryam Keyhani, socialite Jenna Bitove and The Society’s Ashleigh Dempster and Amanda Blakley.

Party Pages: Rufus and Martha Wainwright, Jorn Weisbrodt and more at Sunday night’s hottest Luminato after-party

On Sunday night, after Rufus Wainwright sang his heart out to a massive crowd at David Pecaut Square for Luminato, the Shore Club was the hot spot for his friends and family. Soon-to-be husband Jorn Weisbrodt arrived sporting a fitted blazer with impressive lapels, while a post-performance Wainwright came sweaty and casual. Wainwright’s sister Martha was spotted having a hearty laugh with musician Teddy Thompson. The elegant and poised aunt to the Wainwrights, Anna McGarrigle, captured everyone’s attention with her warm smile and glossy greyed hair. Other guests included Wainwright’s dear friends, fellow musicians Sarah Slean and Royal Wood, Reg Vermue and more. Sadly, K’naan and Jake Gyllenhaal decided to skip the after-party. They were probably too full from the dinner they had at Terroni earlier.

43 cuddly and cute pups from this weekend’s Doggy High Tea at the King Edward Hotel

Yesterday afternoon at the King Edward Hotel, Woofstock launched with a Doggy High Tea celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee (Woofstock takes place next weekend in the St. Lawrence Market area). Comedian Alan Park served as the MC for the event, and dogs of all shapes and sizes walked the red carpet (yep) before they sat down to socialize over doggy cakes, cookies and tea (yep). A dog in pink, Roxie, made her official “coming out” into doggy society, and her owner came with a press release in hand (yep). We saw kings, queens and some oddities, but there’s no doubt our hearts grew several sizes after spending an afternoon with some of the most adorable pups.

Gallery: David Miller, Jully Black and others share the one thing you should know before you die at the Top Ten Event

(Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

Here’s the concept: nine notable Torontonians (chef David Rocco couldn’t make it)—or honorary Torontonians for the night—each get 10 minutes to share the one thing they think everybody should know before they die. Last Thursday, former Toronto mayor David Miller, singer Jully Black, TIFF CEO Piers Handling and others showed up at the Winter Garden Theatre to offer their collected wisdom at Stuart Knight’s second annual Top Ten Event in support of the Stephen Lewis Foundation. We showed up to receive said wisdom (and, of course, to fraternize with the bold-faced names at the exclusive after-party—Sandra Shamas now wants to be our Facebook friend. Just sayin’.).

The Rosens, the Nugents and other monied guests walked like Egyptians at the Fandango gala

Wannabe Cleopatras, pharaohs and sultans took over the Ritz-Carlton on Saturday night, causing the doorman to do a double-take as guests arrived for the annual Fandango fundraiser in support of Bridgepoint Health. This year’s theme was “On the Nile,” and the 450 guests were encouraged to shake things up by dressing with Egyptian “flair.” To our surprise, many did, and in place of the typical stuffy attire befitting a society affair, we saw snake-adorned crowns, towering gold and black nemes headdresses, kohl-lined eyes, jewel-encrusted baubles, flowing robes and sequined loin cloths (often worn on top of tuxedos). Among the monied guests were Catherine and David Nugent, W. Bruce C. Bailey, Shangri-La’s Alex Filiatrault, Evelyn and Harry Rosen, dapper duo Andy Body and Alan Hanlon and politicos Jerry Grafstein, Mike Harris, Paula Fletcher and David Shiner.
