(Image: Dustin Rabin)

Yesterday at the Masonic Temple on Yonge Street, Broken Social Scene alum Feist walked home with this year’s Polaris Music Prize for Metals, her fourth studio album. She overcame the competition from a buzzy shortlist that included Japandroids, Handsome Furs, Fucked Up, Cold Specks, Yamantaka // Sonic Titan, Drake, Kathleen Edwards, Cadence Weapon and Grimes, the Montreal phenom behind Visions and many people’s favourite to win. The prize is awarded to the best Canadian album of the year, based solely on “artistic merit,” and a carries a purse of $30,000. Below, a roundup of who said what before, during and after the big night:

Michael J. Fox, Will Arnett and Lorne Michaels among Canadians receiving 2012 Emmy nominations

The 2012 prime time Emmy nominations list is full of Canadians: Michael J. Fox is up for Outstanding Guest Actor for his recurring role on The Good Wife; Rosedale-raised Will Arnett received a nod for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy for his work on 30 Rock; and Toronto-born SNL creator Lorne Michaels is up for a writing award. There also appears to be an appetite for children’s programming that frankly discusses teen issues, like being transgendered or  a teen mom who is an aspiring pop singer, because for the second year in a row, Degrassi is nominated in the Outstanding Children’s Program category. Dragonette wins best dance recording at the 2012 Junos, ending DeadMau5’s winning streak

For the last four years, DeadMau5 has won the Juno for best dance recording of the year, but last night Martina Sorbara (of electronic dance outfit Dragonette) and Martin Solveig took home the honour for their hit “Hello.” When the Globe asked Joel Zimmerman (DeadMau5) how he felt about the loss, he claimed to be fine with it because he’s toured with Solveig and he’s a “super-talented, wicked-cool guy.” He also went on to say that Solveig is “a really cool dude. I guess he kind of deserves [a Juno]—and if Dragonette had a hand in that, then yay.” We imagine he’s cool with the win because there was no mention of Molly in the song or the acceptance speech.

Canadians at the Oscars: Christopher Plummer and Justin Bieber edition

Christopher Plummer toasts to his accomplishment (Image: Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images Entertainment)

Last night at the 84th Annual Academy Awards, the Canadian quotient was at an impressive low (seriously, Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling were nowhere to be found). That said, Christopher Plummer did take home Best Actor in a Supporting Role and appeared humbled by the honour (at 82, he’s the oldest actor to be awarded an Oscar); Cirque du Soleil performed an homage to the silent film era, complete with kooky expressions and what looked like jazz hands; and Justin Bieber made a cameo in host Billy Crystal’s Best Picture montage. Sadly, Monsieur Lazhar did not win Best Foreign Language Film. Of course, a number of things that have nothing to do with Canada also deserve mentioning: we confirmed that Billy Crystal isn’t funny to people under the age of 80; Angelina Jolie’s leg was a sight to behold; Emma Stone was positively charming; Gwyneth Paltrow and Robert Downey Jr. proved—for the second time—that they have absolutely no onstage chemistry; and the Oscars really need to start thinking about taking a cue from the Golden Globes, because sitting through the painful staged banter requires alcohol (not little cellophane bags of popcorn).

TIFF to Tinseltown: a tour of the 16 Oscar-nominated features that screened at TIFF

Now that Oscar campaigns involve a full five months of press events, splashy parties and ukulele deliveries, the Toronto International Film Festival has become the unofficial kickoff of Oscar season. Last September, film-mad Torontonians had the chance to see 16 feature films that are now up for an Academy Award (between drinks at Soho House and rubbing shoulders with Bono, of course). Not to worry if you missed a few—before the little golden men are passed out on Sunday night, we take a look at the movies that started their Oscar journey right here in Toronto. Eugene Levy, Nino Ricci and eight other Torontonians awarded Order of Canada

Ten Torontonians went home with an Order of Canada last week, including Eugene Levy, Lives of the Saints author Nino Ricci and comedic soprano Mary Lou Fallis. In addition to Levy’s comic stylings (we fondly remember his role as an increasingly irate game show host on SCTV), the ceremony recognized his involvement with the Autism Society. Governor General David Johnston gave out 39 awards at Rideau Hall; click the link for the full list. Read the entire story [City News] »

David Cronenberg will be the first Canadian to be awarded a fellowship by the British Film Institute

David Cronenberg (image: ficg)

Toronto-based director David Cronenberg may have made a splash with the debut of A Dangerous Method at TIFF this year, but the director’s lengthy career has been a diverse one: Cronenberg became the king of body horror with Videodrome, Shivers, The Brood, Scanners and Crash, and he’s also known among film students and fans for taking on William S. Burroughs literary neurosis in Naked Lunch. Cronenberg has received many accolades, including Oscar nods for Eastern Promises and A History of Violence, and now the British Film Institute is awarding him with a fellowship, making him the first Canadian ever to receive the honour.

Reaction roundup: Arcade Fire wins the 2011 Polaris Prize

Arcade Fire (Image: Phil King)

Montreal rockers Arcade Fire had a big year in 2011—they won Junos and a Grammy, and as of yesterday, the esteemed Polaris Prize, which awards bands $30,000 for being the best Canadian album of the year. The prize itself is based purely on merit, which means it celebrates Canadian creativity “without regard to musical genre, professional affiliation, or sales history.” With Arcade Fire’s success this year, the band may have seemed the obvious pick out of a shortlist that included artists Austra, The Weeknd, Ron Sexsmith, Timber Timbre, Braids, Galaxie, Colin Stetson, Hey Rosetta! and Destroyer, but their win came with divisive reactions. Check out who said what, after the jump.

The 2011 Gemini Awards’ celebrity guests are but a whisper to TIFF 2011’s mighty roar

Jason Priestley will attend the 26th annual Gemini Awards (Image: Alan Knight)

The Toronto International Film Festival kicks off September 8, but the night before marks the anniversary of another Canadian film and television event: the 26th annual Gemini Awards. The CanCon-friendly celebration will air on CBC in a one-hour broadcast starting at 8 p.m., but while TIFF brings in the big guns from all over the world, the Geminis are, unsurprisingly, nearly A-list-free. This year’s host is one of Brampton’s finest, Russell Peters, and we’re told to expect appearances by Hugh Dillon from Durham County and Flashpoint, George Stroumboulopoulos and Brandon Walsh Jason Priestley. More of the exciting lineup after the jump.

Gemini nominations announced: Flashpoint leads, once again, and controversial Kennedys miniseries gets some nods

The 26th annual Gemini Award nominations were released today and, like last year, Flashpoint features prominently across all categories—the show got 17 nods this year, including Best Dramatic Series. Close on its heels is Call My Fitz, the new HBO Canada series, with 16 nominations and TMN/Movie Central’s Living in Your Car, with 10 nominations. Also nominated for Best Dramatic Series alongside Flashpoint is the now-defunct MTV show Skins, as well as The Borgias, Endgame and The Tudors.

Perhaps the most surprising nominations of the day go to the Kennedys miniseries—shot in Toronto and starring Greg Kinnear and Katie Holmes, the series had trouble getting picked up in the United States (and not just because of Katie Holmes’ atrocious New England accent). The Kennedys finally screened on ReelzChannels across the U.S. and History Television in Canada and has picked up 10 Gemini nominations, including Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for Barry Pepper, Best Photography in a Dramatic Program or Series and Best Dramatic Miniseries or TV Movie.

Alongside The Kennedys is The Pillars of the Earth, based on the novels by Ken Follett and featuring Gordon Pinsent, Donald Sutherland and Alison Pill, with another 10 nominations, including Best Performance by an Actor and Actress in a Leading Role for Ian McChane and Hayley Atwell, Best Writing in a Dramatic Program or Miniseries and Best Dramatic Miniseries or TV Movie.

The Gemini Awards will be broadcast live Sept. 7 on CBC Television.

At the 2011 International Indian Film Academy Awards, sparks flew, Dalton McGuinty was a star, and we saw cross-dressing

Dalton McGuinty: star of stars (Image: Jennifer K. Warren)

Usually, awards ceremonies are tortuously drawn-out affairs that are only exciting for the people up for the prizes. Being at the IIFA Awards at the Rogers Centre on Saturday night, however, was a bit like eating from the wrong—or right, depending on your perspective—tray of brownies at a drunken frat party: so many swirling colours and strange, surreal events appeared before our eyes. True, the presentation was definitely drawn out—starting about two hours late, then continuing for five more hours—but being bored was not a possibility with the over-the-top blend of song-and-dance montages, pyrotechnics, glimmering costumes and comedy bits. Our recap of the ceremony, after the jump.

Hilary Swank, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Bob Rae (of course!) among Bollywood elite at 2011 International Indian Film Academy Awards

Bollywood, Hollywood (Anil Kapoor and Hilary Swank) (Image: David Pike)

Bollywood films are notorious for being unabashedly chaotic, with convoluted storylines, over-the-top costumes and more camp than an episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race. And although the green carpet outside the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards was definitely chaotic—with thousands of shrieking fans and a rabid media clamouring for access to the stars—an air of glamour supplanted the usual kitsch. Bollywood celebs—including Shahrukh Khan, Bipasha Basu, Sunny Deol and Shilpa Shetty— mingled with Hollywood actors like Academy Award winners Hilary Swank and Cuba Gooding Jr., as well as Canadian politicians Bob Rae and Dalton McGuinty.  The outfits were similarly classy (er, for the most part—a few people looked like they got lost on their way to a costume party), with smart tuxedos, dazzling gowns and stunning jewellery.  Our look at the highlights in a gallery after the jump.

The IIFA Rocks fashion show and concert should have been less sponsor, less music and more fashion

Jermaine Jackson in his oddest role since he was a housemate on Big Brother. (Image: David Pike)

Starting off a Bollywood-inspired fashion show with a Michael Jackson tribute concert might be, well, a strange way to kick things off. And indeed, as Jermaine Jackson, the former frontman of the Jackson Five, lead a troupe of MJ dress-alikes (all wearing sequined black jackets and black fedoras) through a rendition of “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’,” we wondered how we ended up in the Twilight Zone. We were slightly more reassured when famed playback singer Sonu Nigam joined Jackson on stage to sing “This Is It,” a song Nigam wrote in memory of the King of Pop (who was apparently a major Bollywood fan, and who died two years ago this past weekend), but we weren’t totally convinced we were in the right place until the fashion show started. Find out about the show’s highlights (and lowlights) after the jump.

Hot Bollywood celebrities and, uh, Jermaine Jackson on the green carpet at the 2011 IIFA Rocks fashion show

Bipasha Basu is drop-dead gorgeous. (Image: David Pike)

On Friday night, Bollywood’s glitterati took over Ricoh Coliseum for the IIFA Rocks concert and fashion show. The green carpet outside of the venue was practically a runway show itself, with stars like Anupam Kher, Sonakshi Sinha and Genelia D’Souza wearing a mix of Indian (Falguni and Shane Peacock) and Western (Alexander McQueen) designers. Jermaine Jackson, Micheal Jackson’s older brother, was also on the runway, but the former Big Brother UK contestant’s appearance wasn’t completely random—he was the opening act for the runway shows.
