The warmth of this refined yet neighbourly St. Clair restaurant travels to the plate, where chefs Chris McDonald and Doug Penfold combine Spanish tradition and ambitious riffs. Every flavour is amplified at Cava: tiritas of wild salmon has eye-popping acid, and a crostino topped with a sardine, a pickled pepper and an anchovy-wrapped olive is exceptionally briny. Seafood is especially good. Rare scallops perch on a funky but strangely compelling black mass, revealed to be huitlacoche, a fungus that grows on corn (“It’s basically rot,” brags the server). For dessert, the baked Alaska is filled with a lemon-pistachio semifreddo so nutty it’s almost savoury. The wine list could be better, but it’s hard to imagine the service improving: it’s friendly, informative and attentive.

This has been my worst experience in Toronto . Two words: total rip-off! It is an insult to people’s intelligence. The food is very average and the portions are so small that you are astonished when you associate to the price that they are charged. You will pay around $50 per person and go for a pizza after your meal.
