Ame: the Rubinos’ latest bacchanal
Ame: the Rubinos’ latest bacchanal
Ten years ago, the fraternal foodies (that’s Michael, the business brain, and Guy, the chef) introduced pan-Asian glamour to the city’s restaurant scene with the clubby Rain. Now they’ve shaken things up again, partnering with party czar Charles Khabouth to give their eatery a recession-defying overhaul, a revamped menu and a new name—Ame. For Toronto Life‘s Best of Fall cover story, we sat down to interview the pair about how two Italian boys came to open a Japanese restaurant on Mercer Street.

Hopefully at this restaurant they will clear all the invoices they owe to their suppliers before they close the doors. I find it hard to believe they can open restaurant after restaurant when their actual business practices are so poor. Maybe we should ask this restaurant to pay what they still owe from Rain.
Interesting. Tell us more, Wine. Something tells me you are a wine agent? Yes/No? Did they stiff you? You DO know there’s a little thing called small claims court, right? Maybe you should pursue further if this actually happened. Have you contacted them and they said they’re not paying?
Is it just me or do these two jokers look like something out of a Edvard Munch painting?
Shocker – am I a wine agent??? Maybe.
Did they stiff me??? Yes.
We have sent them to small claims court but unfortunately once they open up under this new restaurant name they are no longer persuable.
There have been many attempts to contact them, but of course, no reply or payment has ever been received. Funny
They are stiffs alright! I wonder if the “business brain” thinks it is ok to leave suppliers high and dry?
Wine, are you sure about that? Unless they filed for bankruptcy and as long as they are still using their real names, you should still be able to pursue this, provided that you still want to.
I like them and enjoy their restaurants – I think they have great detail in food and service.
But I really hate when people stiff others. That’s just not right. Especially with small industry and also with all the bullshit LCBO rules that you agents have to go through.
I guess if I were you maybe I’d shame them a little more on the food boards and maybe they will magically come up with payment.
I wonder if you know if they’ve done this to others? You can’t be the only one….?
