The cottagey, anachronistically formal restaurant has been left to fade while parent company Oliver and Bonacini focuses on expanding. Although it still maintains many of the trappings of fine dining—pressed linen, delicate stemware—the details are lacking. A rich chestnut and pheasant velouté shows some of the old finesse, but a flabby hunk of roasted foie gras isn’t helped by an overly sweet red cabbage consommé. While a tender, rare loin of venison is smartly paired with honey-glazed roots and crispy polenta, the veal is let down by a stale langoustine farci. A fine lemon and olive oil cake with sweet corn curd shows there’s life in the old girl yet. The thorough international wine list offers good value.

Still worth the trip! by Dan Hamilton from Toronto on 2013-01-30

When we chose this restaurant for our first Winterlicious dinner experience, we opted for proximity and banked on its reputation as one of the top spots in the northburbs. And we read the Toronto Life review and were prepared for the let down. No such experience attened us however, instead we had very attentive service, an expert server who spoke about wine like an enamoured teenager describing the qualities of a high school crush. The leeks and cabbage soup and smoked salmon appetizers were well received, each tasty and presented with much aplomb. It was curious that the winterlicious menu did not have a fish dish. Beef, vegetarian and pork seemed a bit mean but the pork chop was a tender hunk of succulent fare, equally as enjoyable as the braised beef. It would be a slap in the face to the chef to pass on the sticky date pudding they seved up for dessert, unless you are instead having the chocolate mousse cake, which was quite the palate pleaser, the gym be dammed! Overall, the experience was very good. The $25 per table gift card received to return at a later date is quite an unexpected incentive for sure. The decor of the restaurant can best be described as minimalist and it fits in with the understated elegance they may wish to project. I could not help noticing however, that the bench outside the waiting room could do with a coat of paint. You know, it being an elegant restaurant and all!
