The Junction Triangle's snug, eight-table room is illuminated by flickering candlelight fading against fogged-up windows. Eclectic, artsy thirty-somethings in fedoras and oversized sweaters fill the place, chatting over plates of core-warming comfort food, and Pleasantville-friendly staff ensure your wine glass stays full. An elastic wedge of Gouda-like Big Brother cheese is salty and rich, but comes with a saccharine strawberry pâté that looks and tastes like an icing sugar rose on a birthday cake. Mains fare better, especially an inventive parmesan-crusted pie filled with sliced celeriac and, the best dish of the evening, a disintegratingly tender slab of mustardy meatloaf studded with knobs of turnip in a lush, beefy jus (“Sorry you didn’t like it,” winks our server with dad-calibre dorkiness as he clears the polished-clean plate). A mocha brownie advertised on the menu as “moist and delicious” is neither. The affordable Ontario-heavy wine list is occasionally augmented with few marked-down bin-end bottles.
