One of the city’s go-to Thai destinations since 1982, the beautiful teak-panelled room shows signs of age but still has its charms. The long menu hasn’t changed much over the years, with the usual apps cooked by rote: fried spring rolls, breaded calamari, chicken satay with bland peanut sauce. Though the kitchen shies away from heat, leaving some dishes unbalanced, there are some complex mains that explain the place’s longevity. Onion and water chestnut add crunch to a garlicky stir-fry of tender eggplant and fresh basil. A rich curry of beef, potato and chewy unroasted peanuts is sharpened nicely by tamarind and given depth by masala-like spices. A perfunctory wine list. Friendly, engaged service. Mains $14–$45.
