Tucked away at the end of a midtown arcade, Chris McDonald and Doug Penfold’s tapas restaurant is a place of pilgrimage for food lovers. Many sherries, bubblies and wines by the glass front a list packed with rare treats for connoisseurs. Studiously under-decorated walls draw the eye to the bar, where a pig’s skull alludes to the melt-in-the-mouth Iberico ham on offer. Smooth, well-informed servers recommend such new dishes as crisp-fried Japanese eggplant paired with fresh cheese, honey and a tangy tomatillo sauce. A rich sauce scented with fresh bay leaves is equally flavourful with manilla clams and chorizo; slices of crusty bread mop up the tasty juices. Small plates $4–$18.
