Editorial Review

This inviting, surprisingly comfortable spot (set as it is in a drab suburban strip mall) is reminiscent of a neighbourhood joint in Asia. Malay expats from all over the city gather here to enjoy Malay, Thai and Indonesian flavours that are authentic and halal, but not especially refined. Mutton satay, gado-gado and rojak (mixed fruit or vegetable salads with peanut and shrimp sauces), nicely spiced boneless fried chicken, spicy seafood satays, and Penang-style curries bring back warm memories. All is made better with fabulous house roti. Beef rendang—a rich, slowly simmered festival beef dish in a sauce of turmeric, lemon grass, coconut milk, garlic and ginger—is only passable here. Desserts are simple, rich and good for sharing. Friendly wait staff serve fruit drinks and ice pops. Unlicensed. Mains $10–$18.
