L’Auberge de France star [?]

Reviewed by Toronto LifeThe exquisite aroma of freshly baked bread hits you as soon as you walk into this large, welcoming bakery-café-shop. A surprising find on an otherwise drab strip of downtown Belleville, L’Auberge offers sandwiches and other midday fare along with excellent croissants, brioche and loaves. Come evening, it transforms into a bistro. For lunch, little individual quiches arrive with wonderfully crisp, buttery crusts. Sandwiches appeal to all tastes, from ham and brie to a croque monsieur to a satisfying tuna niçoise with olive, hard-boiled egg and anchovies. Unfortunately, there’s a marked lack of flavour in side salads and soups. It’s best to save room for delicious desserts, like fresh raspberries in a heart-shaped pastry shell filled with vanilla cream, and a baked ricotta–chocolate–orange tart. Young servers could use a lesson or two in manners and food handling. Mains $25–$35.
