Fans of Morocco’s smoky, slow-cooked food have long mourned the loss of Eglinton West’s Boujadi. Thankfully, there’s a new influx of North African establishments on the Danforth, east of Pape, and they’re bringing the tajine back to Toronto. Walima is a simple space adorned with a few pillows and paintings of Arab horsemen. Tajines are nicely judged: inside its clay dome, the lamb version is amazingly tender. A rarity in the city, bastillas are crispy phyllo pockets stuffed with meat and veg. The sweetened chicken version, dusted with cinnamon and icing sugar, is excellent but might confuse Western palates. The restaurant is halal, meaning there’s no alcohol—a good opportunity to try traditional Moroccan mint tea. Closed Monday.
