As far as we know, this is Toronto’s first Tunisian restaurant. Like most of the other Muslim spots on the strip, it’s halal, meaning that the dishes are accompanied by juices or mint tea, but no alcohol. A plate of smoky, chewy lamb merguez sausage arrives with grilled potatoes, zucchini and red peppers piled on top of a poached egg, all of it in a pool of tangy tomato sauce. The unusual combination of flavours (smoky, sweet and salty) and textures (chewy, runny and tender) makes for a very enjoyable dish. In mains, a seafood “crêpe” is a small casserole: squid and two prawns (still sporting eyes and tentacles) swim alongside mussels and snails in a garlicky cream sauce. It’s wonderful, and outrageously cheap at $12. Service is shyly deferential. The room is unremarkable, sparsely populated with neighbourhood denizens of many cultures. Unlicensed.
