Its idiosyncrasies are many: capricious hours, frustrating brunch queues and only skim milk for coffee and tea. And with the eclectic decor and garage sale tableware, it feels as if you’re eating at your crazy aunt’s apartment (minus the cats). But the homey charm, vegetarian-friendly menu and low prices have, over the past eight years, earned the loyalty of the neighbourhood’s yuppies and bohos. Rajasthani is a Bollywood-style breakfast of soft scrambled eggs, curried chickpeas, fresh tomato salsa, caramelized onion and lip-searing chilies, with flaky paratha standing in for toast. A good shaking of salt brings the dish to life. Served on crusty baguette, a tuna sandwich is given a splash of Provençal sunshine with roasted peppers, spicy arugula and salty tapenade. A blueberry poppy seed muffin is deliciously old school—not too big, not too sweet, not too cakey. Sluggish service is understandable given the tiny kitchen. Unlicensed.
