Lorne Pancer’s grandfather founded this north Toronto institution in 1957; now in its third generation, the place continues to thrive. Press clippings and old black-and-white photos give the space a family feel, the takeout counter does a steady business in sandwiches and sliced meats, and a no-nonsense waitress steers those dining in toward the pastrami. It’s still Moe’s recipe: well-marbled (though never greasy) beef brisket rubbed with pepper and spices. Shaved thin and served warm on a platter or between rye, its subtle flavour sings, especially when accompanied by crisp coleslaw.
