Editorial Review

An oasis in a bleak industrial park, this bright café attached to the bakery does a brisk weekday business—it’s a cheery alternative to the catering trucks that prowl the streets. The tidy space has an industrial, bare-bones feel—steel tables and white tiles—but pretty displays of jams, cookies, Mighty Leaf teas and fresh-from-the-oven breads soften the hard edges. The constant door chime announces the latest arrival willing to stand in the long line and choose from the limited menu: one soup, one salad with extras, and about a dozen creative—if ultimately somewhat bland—sandwiches. Roast beef on sourdough with a lemony artichoke spread would have been better with simple mustard, while the grilled eggplant on an olive bun with smoked provolone and roasted tomato jam sounds better than it tastes. Asian beef-noodle soup delivers bright flavours of coriander and scallion, but is served barely warm. Desserts by Dufflet. Unlicensed.
