A young crowd crams into pint-sized picnic tables to sip cerveza and soak up the cantina atmosphere at this Salvadorean outpost of good, cheap cooking. Crisp tortilla chips stand at attention in a plate of excellent guacamole, the avocados freshly chopped, vibrant green and creamy. Two fried chicken rolls crackle audibly like candied cigars, revealing stewed meat that’s kicked up with fiery salsa or inferno- inducing jalapeños and onions. Soft tacos come double-wrapped and filled with spicy, carmine- coloured chorizo; chopped lettuce and fresh cream provide the standard cool accompaniment. Pupusa, a chewy cornmeal pancake, comes in four varieties, the best being the gooey-good cheese and zucchini. Terrific combos for under $10 offer great value.
