Twenty years after Donna Dooher and Kevin Gallagher opened Mildred Pierce, the name is a shade different and the location might have moved upmarket, but their weekend brunch is still one of the best in the city. Where else can you find currant and lemon zest scones this high-tea British, plus a knockout caesar? Or blueberry and buttermilk pancakes (their name alone—Mrs. Biederhofs—has entered the local lexicon) so pillowy and full of flavour? However, the kitchen falters here and there: a smoked salmon eggs Benedict, for example, turns up unpleasantly cold. The room is a little sparse (unlike the cozy, campy, frescoed space at the old Sudbury Street location), with its floor-to-ceiling polished concrete. Mildred’s also does dinner, though without any real distinction.
