Glow was open for just three weeks before a fire shut it down last summer, but Rose Reisman and the team behind the Pickle Barrel are a resilient bunch—they’re serving up their take on healthy and seasonal food at the Shops at Don Mills. With pulsating lights and beige upholstery, the dining room feels as contrived as the surrounding outdoor mall. It’s martini lounge meets, well, suburban Pickle Barrel. The sliders—cute bun-less beef, lamb and turkey burgers—are juicy and full of flavour, and the warm mushroom salad with balsamic glaze is irreproachably fresh. A bone-in veal chop is tough, and the rainbow trout with peach and pear relish and sweet potato succotash offers a cacophony of discordant flavours. As for the “mini-indulgences, dessert shooters,” skip these low-fat, low-cal mini-disappointments, and indulge in a full-calorie glass of sauternes. $18–$29.
