It seems like an eternity ago that Tom Thai, a self-taught cook who made his name as a sushi chef, set out for what was then the culinary wasteland of Ossington. Three years later, the strip is one of the most culinarily engaged in the city, and Thai’s friendly, affordable and exquisite Southeast Asian (by way of South America) bistro remains the area’s standard bearer. Thai’s small but big-flavoured plates are the main attraction: the polycultural Arctic char ceviche with apple, ginger and a nice hit of sesame; grilled beef heart that’s dark and deeply flavoured with chilies, lime and teriyaki. The wine list is another draw: it’s well suited to the food and almost ridiculously inexpensive; many bottles aren’t priced much higher than retail. Desserts are the only disappointment: the only two options, a rough green tea crème brûlée and undercooked rice pudding, don’t show the usual love. Small plates $5–$20.
