White tablecloths provide the stage for a roster of deftly executed house-made Indian standards—including an extensive list of vegetarian options—served by an obliging staff. Generously stuffed samosas and greaseless onion bhaji fritters highlight an app platter that demonstrates a remarkable touch with hot oil, though it would be nice to have some non-fried options. Fluffy naan is the perfect utensil for sophisticatedly sauced mains: succulent pieces of lamb shank are delicately laced with cinnamon and lively green cardamom. A somewhat dry tandoori chicken is the only misstep. Wash it down with a house-made soda of lime juice, simple syrup, crushed mint and soda water. Desserts such as rasmalai—chilled cottage cheese dumplings in a refreshing almond- and rosewater-perfumed milk sauce—cater to a non-Western sweet tooth. Limited wine selection. Mains $12–$20.

Located in Toronto’s buzzing midtown, we serve Indian cuisine with excellence in preparation and presentation. Since opening in 2002, we have worked toward breaking the misconceptions often attached to Indian cuisine. Executive chef and owner Pawan Mahendro has been successful in taking on this challenge.
