Editorial Review

In warmer months, the verdant oasis out back is one of the city’s most alluring patios, with modern Indian dance beats and the occasional rumbling train providing the soundtrack. Owner Amar Patel’s innovative menu offers something different from clichéd curry house fare. To start, crisp mini-dosas arrive with onion and cool coconut chutneys for dipping. Juicy yet unbelievably spicy house-made Berkshire pork sausage is for thrill seekers only. Black cod is cooked to perfection and bathed in a south Indian curry sauce flecked with black mustard seeds. Vegetarians can expand their horizons with bottle gourd (kadhoo) sautéed with onion, tomato and a herbaceous blast of cilantro, green chili and ginger. Creamy cardamom-scented rice pudding provides a comforting finish. The intelligent wine list, recently renovated by consulting sommelier John Szabo (the country’s first and, currently, only Master Sommelier), and premium sake demand attention. Knowledgeable service, though the timing needs work. Mains $15–$20.
