Editorial Review

Riding Leaside’s wave of appreciation for Amaya, the city’s best upscale Indian restaurant, owners Hemant Bhagwani and Derek Valleau have opened a more casual spot in the heart of straitlaced Lawrence Park. A communal table and colourful paint job can’t quite hide the last tenant’s rumpus room decor, but the place is buzzing with locals. Decidedly different from Amaya’s, the creative menu offers dishes that nod to Indian street food. Naan sandwiches are filled with anything from lobster in spiced mashed potato to chili beef. Instead of traditional slow braising, fish and meat are cooked à la minute, then plated with rich sauces: for example, a gorgeous tandoori prawn wrapped in lemon sole over coconut chutney. Inventive cocktails shouldn’t be missed. Mains $17–$25, tasting menu $39.
