Reviewed by Toronto LifeBy the strictly objective yardstick of price, this offshoot of one of Toronto’s finest Indian restaurants offers better value than its flagship. By any subjective measure, however, the money saved is a false economy. The food is just as good as, and in some cases identical to, Amaya’s. Tender cubes of lamb bask in a dazzling vindaloo that inflames the palate with acid and pepper. Juicy jumbo prawns arrive in a wonderfully subtle lemon grass–scented coconut chili masala. Delight is in the details, however, and that’s where this casual destination falls short of its polished parent. The narrow, red dining room feels mildly claustrophobic, and an unreliable server reacts to a request for a wine pairing with a look of terror and some unconvincing verbal tap dancing. Some dishes are served lukewarm, and a pre-made frozen kulfi dessert takes 20 minutes. The limited wine list is affordable but could have more inspired choices. Mains $17–$24.
