Studio Café star½ [?]

Reviewed by Toronto LifeAlways second fiddle to the more glamorous (now defunct) Truffles and the hipper Avenue Lounge, this second-floor Four Seasons institution is starting to show its age. The bright, almost garish artwork and bungee-cord chairs recall the era of shoulder pads and tie clips, and the service, while still accommodating and friendly, isn’t as focused or polished as it once was. Once the food arrives, however, it’s clear that there’s life in this old workhorse yet. A textbook French onion soup balances gooey cheese and soft bread against a pure, elegant broth and lots of caramelized onions. The burger, made with fresh ground sirloin, is offered as rare as you like and remains one of the great versions in this burger-mad city. The wine cellar is excellent. Mains $22–$39.
