Serious foodies bemoan the lack of authentic, even decent Greek food in this city. (The degree of despair they experience is right up there with the perpetual longing for real Thai.) From the Danforth to Richmond Hill, GTA Greek menus read the same: souvlaki, moussaka, calamari—fried or grilled—various dips and mezze. This big—about 80 seats—and bustling (families, families everywhere!) Etobicoke taverna has been doing a little better than average since 1996. The room is prettier than most, with exposed brick, warm wood and cozy booths under pergolas; even more promising is the fact that each oak table is outfitted with a bottle of bright green olive oil and proper salt and pepper mills. Deep-fried calamari dipped in garlicky tzatziki is buttery-tender, but the breading is mushy and overly oily. Loukaniko, grilled, citrus-infused, spicy pork sausage, has kick and tons of flavour; the moussaka, on the other hand, is dry and stodgy under its mashed potato top. The wine list is very ordinary—ask about the secret stash of affordable, vintage and very good Greek wines. Servers are on Aegean time, as in slow, but contagiously cheerful and thoughtful. And as with many places where portions are massive, desserts are an outsourced afterthought; best bet is the bite-size chocolate-dipped baklava. Mains $10–$22.
