A sleek bar—ringed by Bay Street deal makers quaffing selections from the wine list of mostly organic offerings—dominates the modern dining room. No matter, though. The menu is high concept—no dish contains more than 650 calories—and the kitchen navigates this dangerous culinary territory adroitly. Executive chef Gordon Mackie steers clear of rabbit food, artfully mixing spices, aromatics, flavour-optimizing cooking techniques and, of course, smaller portions to concoct deeply satisfying dishes. Salads are fantastic: perfectly cooked calamari sits on a jagged formation of Tuscan bread croutons and kidney beans drizzled with a beautiful blood orange dressing. Mains emphasize fish: smoked sablefish enjoys the twin virtues of tasting slightly like bacon while remaining healthy. Gracious service. Mains $12–$22.
