Reviewed by Toronto LifeIf environmental activists—say, David Suzuki and Ted Danson—were to meet for dinner in Richmond Hill, this would not be their first choice. The shark fins, prominently displayed near the entrance, may scare away the eco-conscious, but they clearly signal the restaurant’s penchant for extravagance. Compared to the shark’s fin soup, far less havoc is wreaked on the oceans by the restaurant’s namesake: thin slices of chewy, delicately flavoured abalone braised in oyster sauce and complemented by plump black mushrooms. For heartier appetites, there’s Peking duck: the skin is golden and crackling, the meat moist but not oily. Avoid the spring rolls; they’re cheaper and better where the waiters don’t speak flawless English. This is the place to try the delicacies that you wouldn’t trust your standby neighbourhood joint to prepare. Mains $9–$50.
