A few blocks north of Yonge and Eg, and upstairs from a forgettable sushi joint, Cha Liu is precisely the sort of quaint hole in the wall that every neighbourhood longs for. Regulars flock here for reasonably priced, well-executed dim sum classics, such as siu mai dumplings: here they’re given a delicate slice of scallop to complement the traditional shrimp and pork combo. Miniature barbecue pork buns are incredibly fluffy, with sweetly spiced centres. The barbecue duck chang fun brings slippery rice noodle wrappers packed with crunchy, intensely flavoured bits of Peking-style duck. Attentive servers. Small plates $4–$8.
