Reviewed by Toronto LifeCelebrating families crowd one of Chinatown’s few upscale spots. And there’s plenty of northern Chinese fare to celebrate with. Well-crafted dumplings—the pan-fried pork variety is bursting with porcine flavour—or a thick rolled pancake stuffed with sliced beef and scallion. Most tables go for the intense General Tso chicken, a luxe version of the strip mall staple: crispy fried bits of chicken smothered in a sweet sauce with allspice and clove notes. The perfect accompaniment is a side of sautéed green beans topped with dried shrimp, which give the dish a mildly fishy aroma and a nice salty bite. Most diners skip wine in favour of tea or Tsingtao, a Chinese beer. Service is workmanlike. Mains $8–$15.
