Last winter, the menu at this Danforth standout saw a few changes—the occasional exotic touch, smart Indian spicing being the most notable—but the kitchen’s “think global, eat local” philosophy hasn’t changed one bit, and at its best, the cooking is precisely layered and confident. A roasted tomato purée is a perfect example: it gets cumin and a touch of chili heat before it’s poured at the table over mild paneer and peeled, chilled green grapes. Hot and cold, spicy and mild, tart and mellow, it’s a masterful soup. An unfortunate Dungeness crab “brik” is half samosa, half phyllo pocket and lacking any flavour that’s even reminiscent of crab. Mains make the most of top-end meats. Wild caribou leg from Nunavut speaks for itself, seared just to rare and sided with excellent chewy-tender spaetzle, spiced red cabbage, and a creamy turnip purée that’s good enough to rob a diner of his dignity. The cheese selection shows up the dessert list. The wine list is strong in Ontario bottles, though prices—Le Clos Jordanne’s 2005 Grand Clos, for instance, tagged at a whopping $150—are hugely inflated. Mains $18–$39.
