Edward Levesque’s Kitchen star½ [?]

Reviewed by Toronto LifeThe room combines easy diner style with candlelight and cushioned banquettes. Levesque himself works the stoves—and runs the occasional plate—during both the weekend brunch blitz and the quieter buzz of weeknight suppers. His menu features simple but innovative dishes prepared with whatever is in season on his own farm in Haldimand County. To begin, four rich grilled sardines need nothing more than cucumber-tomato salsa and preserved lemon for balance. Hanger steak could be sliced more thinly to avoid chewiness, but it’s tasty, especially with its smooth chive mash, oven-roasted plum tomatoes, and a rich, grainy mustard jus. Mains $14–$25
