This charming house turned restaurant seems out of place in the heart of busy North York. In what used to be a family’s dining room, regulars choose plates from a French and Italian menu and dine on veal scaloppine in a sweet marsala wine sauce; in a converted den, they feast on a New York cut steak au poivre in cream sauce with green peppercorns. Others might opt for osso buco, or baked jumbo pasta shells with ricotta, goat cheese and asparagus. Sweet tooths leave enough room for homemade crème brûlée or triple mousse cake. Chez Laurent also offers a varied wine list. Mains $9.95–$21.95.
