In a city dominated by McPubs, this neighbourhood local stands out. With the exception of Guinness, Canadian microbrews flow exclusively from the taps, and the menu focuses on hearty comfort food rather than greasy pub grub. Its uniqueness draws a diverse range of clientele: students, thirsty brokers and silver-haired WASPs all comfortably fill the two-floor space. To start, baby spinach is tossed in a terrific maple dressing and topped with tangy cheddar, toasted almonds and crisp apple. While tasty, the meat loaf is a bit loose, and the lumpy mash and mushroom gravy could have come from Grandma’s kitchen. The vegetable and chickpea curry is more than just a token vegetarian dish: the veggies are bright and the legumes soft; a bed of bulgur soaks up the rich coconut sauce. Cheery and efficient service. Mains $17–$24.
