Shaded by a century-old willow, the back patio is so pretty and relaxing that even parochial west-enders will venture across the Don to enjoy an al fresco pint. The selection of suds at this Riverdale local is staggering, though the VQA wine list deserves equal attention. The burgers are dynamite. Served on a soft sesame seed bun, the thick patties—made with nothing but straight-up beef (the meat is so flavourful, not even salt is added)—are juicy, bloody and worthy of their reputation as the city’s best. The rest of the menu is hit-and-miss: seafood chowder is light, with salmon, halibut, shrimp and spuds gently poached in dill-scented cream; but the vegetarian curry, though deftly spiced, brings mushy veg. Crisp service. Mains $8–$40.
