Smokin’ Bones $30 Gourmet [?]

Reviewed by Toronto Life

THIS RESTAURANT IS NOW CLOSED.

Venture a few blocks east of Yonge-Dundas Square and the flashy billboards give way to rundown corner stores and vacant parking lots. Dinner isn’t necessarily what passersby are looking to score. It’s no surprise, then, that the latest addition to the city’s growing number of Southern soul food outposts—a no-frills caf-style counter, with a small seating area upfront—isn’t bustling. It’s a shame, because Smokin’ Bones has promise. For one thing, it’s one of the only of the genre to offer good meatloaf, the light smokiness putting the beef in a different orbit from the ketchup-topped kind we grew up on. Pulled pork has the right degree of chewiness, and the house sauce is perfectly peppery. Fatty fried chicken is over-battered, but staff are so eager for feedback, it’s a good bet they’ll work out the kinks. Unlicensed. Cash only.
