Home to sleek lounges, graphic design studios and ever more loft condos, the King West strip between Bathurst and Spadina is the perfect setting for a somewhat corporate and slightly hipster late-night sandwich joint. Reggie’s, owned by the same people behind Joy Bistro and South of Temperance, manages to achieve a surefire culinary troika: it’s unpretentious, serves up tasty grub, and is open until 5 a.m. The chalkboard menu reads like a hit list of sandwich classics: ham and swiss, tuna melt, grilled cheese, pulled pork, roast vegetables. There’s nothing too adventurous, and the sammies are respectably large, but quality can vary wildly. The sauce to bun to meatball ratio of the meatball sandwich varies from ideal to sloppy joe; the philly steak’s organic meat is fresh and un-greasy, melding perfectly with tangy peppers and onions. Aside from salads, the rest of the menu skews toward feeding drunk people at 2 a.m. To wit, four types of poutine and, quite possibly, the holy grail of intoxicated snacking: deep-fried mac-and-cheese. Crispy on the outside, with a gooey, cheesy centre, it would be even more magnificent with crispy pancetta. Unlicensed.
