The food here easily meets the high standards set by the many other Ethiopian restaurants along this strip of Bloor. We’re told by the staff that the chef is “an elderly grandmother who knows many cooking secrets.” Her talent is evident on the heaping platters of traditional fare. Doro wat (chicken and hard-boiled egg in berbere sauce) packs complex heat. Tibs (diced lamb sautéed with caramelized onion) is elevated above the usual with fragrant fresh rosemary. Kitfo, Ethiopia’s answer to steak tartare, is tangy and rich, with raw ground beef marinated in mitmita chili powder and herb-infused butter. Music provides warmth, whether it’s African jazz or Bob Marley. A coffee ceremony with burning frankincense rounds out the meal well.
