This area has become a hot spot for young couples priced out of Leslieville. There’s a lot to like—the subway, for one, and recreational amenities such as the East York Curling Club and a new skate park. There’s also easy access to big brand-name stores at the Shoppers World Danforth plaza at Victoria Park and Danforth. Indie shops and restaurants are still sparse, but it’s a quick jaunt to the north African eateries, or Greektown a few more blocks over. The biggest stretch of green space is Stan Wadlow Park, where the meandering Taylor Massey Creek meets the Don River.
HOUSING STOCK: A somewhat bewildering mix—streets such as Cedarvale Avenue are dotted with everything from tiny, aluminum-faced bungalows to detached and semi-detached 100-year-old houses made of solid brick.
BARGAIN ZONES: There’s a CN line just south of Strathmore, so properties within hearing distance are slightly lower priced.
THE VERDICT: Suitable for first-time buyers looking for deals and homeowners who appreciate a welcoming neighbourhood for new Canadians. (Influxes here include Bangladeshi immigrants moving out of Crescent Town apartment towers, or north Africans spreading east from Donlands.)
NEIGHBOURHOOD HOT SPOTS:
Dosa Dosa Dosas from this Bangladeshi takeout joint are filled with dry curries of meat and veggies. 2795 Danforth Ave., 416-693-3030.
St. Clair Ice Cream This tiny corner shop has been serving up precarious cones of made-on-site frozen treats for more than 60 years. 2861 Danforth Ave., 416-699-1248.
