This neighbourhood is close to many of the east end’s star attractions: the shops, restos and seemingly endless string of coffee shops in Leslieville spill over from the west while the calm of the Beach beckons from the east, and the lively Little India strip sits in the middle. Post-slump, sales near Monarch Park have been brisk, with better value than most streets in Riverdale.
HOUSING STOCK: Options abound: standard semis, simple brick row houses, small cottages, and clusters of newer townhomes.
BARGAIN ZONES: Houses less than $300,000 can be found south of Monarch Park and toward Gerrard. D’Arcy Robert of Royal LePage recently sold a cute two-bedroom (with parking and a garden) on Walpole for $272,000.
THE VERDICT: Families priced out of Riverdale are moving in alongside young couples who can’t decide between Leslieville and the Beach.
NEIGHBOURHOOD HOT SPOTS:
Sweet Bliss A rotating selection of decadent desserts—say, red velvet cupcakes, caramel blondies, or roasted pumpkin pies—keeps weekend lineups steady at this tiny Leslieville storefront. 1304 Queen St. E., 416-916-7895.
Walima Café This new arrival serves up traditional Moroccan food such as well-spiced tagines and potent pots of mint tea. 1450 Danforth Ave., 647-268-3327.
