Parents browse the adult section up front, while offspring pore over more than 200 board books and a hand-picked selection of classics in the funky back room. On Saturday afternoons, tykes ages five to nine learn about such subjects as animals and astronomy in hands-on pay-what-you-can classes in the downstairs art gallery. At the Danforth location, a Kids Lounge runs a variety of literacy programs for everyone from tots to teens. A focused selection of toys includes a battery-free Dynamo pig flashlight ($10) and whimsical, handmade animal bookends (from $70) by the women’s Kenana Knitter collective in Kenya.
