Toddlers sit on a play parachute while their caregivers bounce it up and down, creating waves, and it looks as if they’re having fun. But looks are deceiving: the tykes are also learning about the difference between hard and soft. And that baby playing peek-a-boo? She’s learning about cause and effect. Who knew? Seven levels of playschool classes for tykes up to age five incorporate games and draw on 30 years of Gymboree program experience. Other classes focus on art and music. A handout at the end of each class suggests at-home activities for keen parents. Teachers also lead fun and educational birthday parties (from $250). Ages: newborn to five years
