New Conservatory of Music

Some 2,400 students pass through the 43 rooms of this unassuming building every week, taking lessons for instruments ranging from piano and guitar to brass, woodwinds and drums. Lessons can be private or communal. The school holds a big festival-cum-competition every June, in which students play everything from rock ’n’ roll solos to Broadway tunes. Harmony, history, counterpoint and theory classes round out the New Conservatory offerings.

half-hour private lessons $28–$42; one-hour group lessons $22.50–$26; $149 lifetime registration fee; free aptitude test; scholar­ships available
