The COC’s programs aim to show kids that there’s more to the genre than Bugs Bunny doing Wagner. In Operaworks classes, multiple professionals help participants explore the music, drama and design aspects of theatre and opera. Opera Remixed! has teens delve into two operas; lyric rewriting and scene revamping is encouraged. Opera Jam! students learn how music enhances storytelling, with sessions on musical styles, movement, voice, putting traditional lyrics to new tunes, and resetting librettos. The Saturday Morning Opera Club, for kids in grades 2 to 4, combines opera characters and stories with creative music making. The After School Opera Program delivers workshops in music, drama, mime, costume design, makeup and movement, enabling kids (grades 3 to 7) to create an end-of-term performance.
